CartographPC V1.1 by Arkanix Labs 17:25
CartographPC V1.1 by Arkanix Labs

CartographPC is a Windows application created to assist in designing tile-based datamaps. This devtool serves as a companion piece to our C64 native Cartograph devtool. The original purpose of CartographPC was to enable us to take nice screenshots of our datamaps without having to take four or six screenshots of smaller windows and piece them together. CartographPC has since grown into a full editor with the benefit of being able to load datamaps created on the C64 directly into memory and edit, save, and move them back to C64 without much hassle.

It works by creating datamaps using tilesets created on C64 with the old, but popular, Ultrafont editor. Datamaps can have dimensions of 1 to 255 tiles horizontally and 1 to 127 tiles vertically. CartographPC allows the user to create a datamap as small as 1x1 tiles up to 255x127 tiles, but the smallest size compatible with Cartograph is 40x25 tiles (one screen). This application was created as an internal devtool for Arkanix Labs. We’re using Cartograph and CartographPC extensively with our Crimson Twilight Trilogy (tile-based CRPG) and Damned: Out Of Hell (push scroller shooter/jump and run) projects.

OFFTOPIC: :A note about the final democompo at BP 2010 02:53
The PC demo compo ended just now. I somehow didn’t find any special demo in Amiga compo, although that "we came in peace" was kinda cute but not very consistent. However, last two demos. CNCD Fairlight (using only the dots) and Farbrausch one were really worth the wait. The first one was a bit more original and well executed and FB one was a more kick ass (especially thanx to really realistic snowy-foggy-mountain country and all the other things flying around and in and out. Also the final ending with the a mysterious flying thing heading to the sun was really positive and stunning. And the words "the New Beginning..." hmmm.. there is something on the horizon.

 BP 2010 numbers 23:57
About 1000 visitors in the hall. About 1050 watching TV stream http://bptv.untergrund.net/
 The last Breakpoint moments... 23:41
http://bptv.untergrund.net/ the stage is now occupied by a live band (Ultrasound?) featuring very bad guitar playing and very bad singing. KB on keys wasn’t that bad, but didn’t help it with singing either. I thought I missed Amiga compo, but maybe I didn’t. I don’t exactly know what is going on, but I’m at least glad that Forever party isn’t the only party where it’s organizers have their embarrassing moments here or there. And they finally go away.. and amiga demo compo starts in few moments, hopefully.
 Breakpoint C64 democompo 18:14
http://bptv.untergrund.net/ before we start with the compo. There is still 96kB running. There was a cute vector game called Spike released in the compo, produced by Peiselulli of TRSI. About 5-10 min to start of the compo. (18:14 now) Ok compo has ended. There was 4 entries and one fake.

#1 Zak is back / Onslaught a teaser demo of a huge remake of a classic point and click adventure game Zack McCracken featuring graphics on stereoids & detailed animation even in backround (at least as it seems from the preview. It should support all the latest hardware and expansions for better gameplay.

#2 Deim Suddlander Seim Vadder by Drago / Kackfoddse not worth a word at all.

#3 Agiel / Inversion they say it's their first C64 demo and they were learning coding C64 only lately. Some nice effects. Decent design for newcomers.

#4 Black Spark / Black Sun First some triangle vector with 3 balls (sprites?) on the ends of the vector. Some kind of replicating of dolby surround setting effect on pc? Dunno. Then some some dot vectors (as subtle as dot vectors always have been) plus cool msx. Caleidoscope effect in 2x2 mode was nice. In the end there was a face with light surface effects (or how to call it). Nice. Then there was a some sort of multiplexed sprite 3d cubes dot vector, and the sprite triangles. And that was it.

#5 Snapshot / Glance The longest demo in the compo. Nice vector plus sprite balls again. Really dramatic music. And even more dramatic music through the whole demo. It was a kind of silly to watch those 2 chunky bitmap planes rotating in a small "widescreen like" box with that dramatic music playing in background. I would probably drop this effect completely out of the demo. Since then it gets only better. Nice picture with a very realistic moving water reflection. Then some 3d like effect with lines stretching to sides and zooming at the same time while scrolling down in a constant flow from top to bottom. It looked really cool and big. Then some supernova-like fire effect in 2x2.Then there was a really cute part with robotic hand drawing greetings. Unfortunately there was no space for greetings for DMAgic ;-). Then there was some bigger than standard sized filled vector rotating in full 50 FPS (at least they wrote that in introduction screen before the part started). I didn't see anything special on that one, but it wasn't bad either. A multicolor pic with "Glance" written on bottom with rotating 2x2 textured ball vector. I couldn't make it myself, but I somehow didn't see anything special about it again. In the end of the demo they show some recreation of some PC demo effect (we fly inside of a tunnel that is again calculated in 2x2 chunky mode (or is it 4x4? I'm not 100% sure, but it was fast and colorful and with kinda realistic and good looking movement around it too.) Why not. The end of the demo says something about "parties going but demos staying". Nice pathos for the last demo in the compo. Digestable.

In the end of this demo I was asking myself if there is anything better going to be shown at Breakpoint as it seemed pretty conclusive on it's own. And well, this was really the end of it. It's leaving me pretty hungry for X-2010 demo feast. Let's hope the usual suspects will satisfy us! ;-)

Meanwhile: some C-64 stuff from BP 2010 appearing at CSDB 15:06
Oldschool music compo just playing at BP2010 14:13
http://bptv.untergrund.net/ kinda crappy tunes in the beginning.. hrmpfz. You're embarassing us guys, I don't even know who you are btw. ;-) anyway my daughter likes it, she dances around bleeps in tune #2. Ahhh.. #3 tune for Amstrad from Zik/Futurs. A bit better one. Unsatisfied Love - #4 tune by Intensity (Arman Behdad) start's slow and continues that way all the time.. Not bad, but nothing to really dance around. There is a short text next to the tune saying: if you a never had relationship with a girl, and start to have one night stands with them instead, you will be quite disappointed about what you see. Sex or See. | (I don't get it .. hm). #5 tune Wurzflesich by Selectanovel, it's some mod tune or something. #6 La fantasia. 68kb tune.. nice sounds, simplistic melody arange, repetitive drum arrange. Seems like all memory was used for sounds ;-) (ok just joking ;-). A bit better later. Still not a top chiptune I ever heard though. #7 Intoxication by Stainless Steel well.. you don't win compos on German parties with this kind of heavy sound and complex arranges I think. but nevertheless it's enjoyable thing. #8 In bed with the lawnmover hm.. good name for tune, pity I didn't came up with that one ;-). Tune is composed by Response / Darklite and it sounds a bit simplistic. #9 Aaaaa.. dalezy around!! Good multispeed attempt. Knucklebastards.. btw. my daugther still jumping around, with help of wooden "pull me around" crocodile. Tune received a subtle but well deserved applause. #10 The Genesis Experiment II by oerg866 and Xiny6581. A relaxing tune for Sega Megadrive. Chill oooout.. ;-) #11 No Tommorow nice attempt to earn points on the name connected with party motto. It even has some nice chiptune features, but all it's average thing. I heard much better ones. And the solo is very very very simplistic. More slides and glides pleeeeze! ;-) Tune arranged by someone called Curt Cool and i has 68k. #12 Quest for Shrubbery by Mice/Brainstorm never heard of this dude. But it sounds quite cool for a someone I never heard of before. Nice tempo and ok melody. (and that's all I give you dude ;-). Next pleeze! #13 Arised Stratomorphs by Xiny6581 a tune for new sid. Starts mysteriously... and seems to have problems with concetration.. the melody goes into all directions and nowhere at the same time. Pity. The backround stuff and effects are quite okay although a bit sid-oldschool. Tune has restarted but nobody noticed it seems ;-) Ah they did.. fine. #14 Lost Signal by Aceman Goooood! Finally a party tempo. (playing from unexpanded amiga 500). Aaaaah.. the echoes.. and suspension. That's how I like it. ;-) I like the 81 like sweeps too. It's nothing extra inventive, but probably the first one I really enjoy in this compo. Ppl liked it too. Received some whoas and applause. #15 The Matchbox Zeppelin by Pinza of Dekadence 64 and spontz . It's a NES tune and a bit messy if you ask me. It has *everything* though. ;-)) #16 Flamethrower by Reed of Fairlight featuring fuckings to lamers! Ok it's interesting it has samples, it's noisy. But hey choose wisely next time. Do you want to have those beatiful sounds of sid in the tune, or that extremely overloadede sampled sounds killing the overall good feeling of the tune. Sorry I'm more for those clean sid sounds. (btw. first time I went with volume down, instead of up). Received some applause too, people kinda liked it it seems. Ok that was all. My winner: Lost Signal by Aceman. And hey, where was Fanta? How could you do this to us dude? ;-)) I'll be back (hopefully) in "live" report from the c64 demo compo stream around 18:00.
