Amorphis Pack #5 – review

Written by CreaMD

Fifteen days after release in the MAIL-SWAP scene we bring you the Amorphis_Pack #5

Amorphis – well known Polish music label again brings the collection of top quality tunes. This time by: Cleve – (Norbert Kowalski), Olsen – (Marcin Olkowski) and Froyd (Boleslaw Ogrodowczyk).

On the disk you can also find a small screen-switching onefile demo Tekno Rules and a word guessing game in Polish having surprisingly an English name – Gallows v0.5.

Okay let us listen to the tunes...

Cleve

Musics by Cleve were composed in DMC 5.0 and all what can I say is that the sound is well polish(ed) and really outstanding. Generally it's really a refreshing audial experience, but often too short lasting.

Small techno – nice sound, quite neat beat and very interesting squeeky effects – still quite boring techno tune. (5/10)

End of Music – slow tune, slightly overusing DMC's SWITCH command (sorry for being too technical). It has only some 2 minutes and I think it's a pity as after first minute tune cheers up to a pretty promising stuff. It simply ends too soon (5.5/10)

Phantom of the Opera – remix – Nice drummy rendition of the Phantom of the Opera music. The bass line is quite disturbing sometimes. Still a good tune. (6/10

Oukidouki – a little bit mellow tune, not my taste. But I'm sure people who like slow tunes would find this one interesting. (5/10)

The Black – this one really has it's own plot. Starts slowly and really has a great atmosphere. It evolves into a really outstanding soundtrack. (7/10)

Lalamido – Wow! What a percussion. This time cleve wasted 2 channnels to make you fall of the chair with his great rythm drum. The arrange also is quite outstanding. If we cover one ear and try to not to notice a little bit polish spiced melodies we get a great tune. (7.7/10)

Musical – Another great percussion in this tune. This sounds a little bit like a sampled drum from USA Team's Rockmonitor2 introtune. After a very promissing begining, atmosphere is lost somewhere around 1:15 – never to be found again. Tune ends VERY quickly after 2 minutes in fadeout – definitely not a good idea. (5.5/10)

No Name – Absolutely great beginnig, followed by a great music. This one is really good! I don't know where I have heard such a nice sounds but It must have been quite a long ago. Still only 2:15 tune. Hey, this is a musicpack, not a democompo Cleve. We expect to hear a rich and lenghty musics – not party-edits! This would score much better if it was longer. (6/10)

U.S.S.R – One of my favourite tune of 80'ties. I don't remember this tune being covered on c64. Nothing surprising, but quite a good rendition IMO. (7/10)

Moonlight Shadow – Oh no! Not this tune – covered again. (5/10)

Ding Dong – A lot of sound experimenting in this one. Some sounds are quite similar to Cane's (ADSR). Hey does it last only 1:25? (4/10)

ABC music – Good sound, not too interesting melody. (5.5/10)

Short muzak – Now this is a sound! Simple music, but worth play out very loud. (7/10)

Trele Moreli – The last Cleve's tune in this collection. Not very interesting beginning followed by not very interesting middle part which is a little bit more interesting around 1:00 but then again falls to boredom. After 1:45 very interesting percussion sound starts play, then motive from 1:00 repeats and again that nice percussion. Problem is that it ends sooner that it begins in fadeout at 2:29!!! Oh not again… (5.9.10)

Olsen

Only one tune named ‚Brain Lack‘ from Olsen. Composed in DMC 5.0. Breakbeat stuff hard to describe. Quite listenable, but nothing extra. (5.5/10)

Froyd

Froyd's tunes are composed in JCH editor/player but it's not that much of difference. ‚The Robots‘ is quite short and looped and doesn't have any special sounds. (4.5/10)

Black Mass – This is more interesting than previous Froyd's tune but still nothing special. Again too short and depressive. (5/10)

Explanation of Creamd's very subjective evaluating system. Everything over 4,9 points is worth listening. Everything between 5 to 6,9 points I like pretty much, everything from 7 to 9 is bombastic and definitely reccomended to play on a BIG sound equipment, over 9 it is simply gonna make you sweat ;-). And by the way, more comments I write, more inspirative tune it is, but remember it is not a rule.
